4. Afternoon Rounds
Before Afternoon Rounds
- Residents should have seen all consult/ICU pts prior to afternoon rounds and gathered essential data on these patients
- DO NOT WAIT until PM Rounds to tell fellows about new consults. Consults can be staffed with Fellows, or with SOW/Attending On Call if Fellows are, at any time.
- Be sure the census is updated with regard to the following:
- New Floor Consults
- New ER/Trauma Consults
- ALL OR cases from that day
- Following day’s OR schedule (plus add-ons) listed on Page 2
- Ideally, this can be done immediately following AM rounds
However, the OR schedule will change during day so it should be reviewed prior to PM rounds and again in the late evening
Afternoon Table Rounds: ~ 3:00 pm
- Begin at approximately 3 pm (depending on fellow availability)
- All NPs, residents, and fellows (not in OR) attend
- NPs will present objective data and updates on all primary floor patients
- Residents present all consult patients & new consult
- Pediatric Surgery Fellow will then make plans on all patient
Occasionally, if clinical fellow is unavailable, one of the sub-specialty fellows will run afternoon rounds
After Rounds:
- Make any additional changes to the Census noted on rounds
- OR case assignments for following day will be made
- “Divide & Conquer” remaining floor work, postop checks, pre-op/consents for next day’s case
Walk rounds to see new consults / sick patients with fellow
*Timely and efficient PM rounds are essential to our ability to finish the day’s work, prepare for tomorrow, and get people home*
